22 - 24 October - Ceret

Our English friends who live most of the year in their remote villa high in the Pyrenees came to lunch on Tuesday. It is always hard to organise a time when we are both in France. They had just returned from a month-long trip to Sri Lanka, which they were keen to describe to us. Clearly they had a wonderful time. For us, it would be lovely to visit but there are other places we'd like to explore first if we can. Lunch was a long lazy affair, and the curry we'd made for lunch suited the cooler, wetter day.

We have only started to have rain recently, with the temperatures dropping a little at the same time, but the trees have been losing their leaves for a while. However, after last night's storm, they won't be dropping any more leaves for a while. If anything was loose, it was lost. The storm last night was, according to the Catalan news this morning, likened to a hurricane. Ceret got off pretty lightly, as it hit the coast just south of Barcelona the hardest. One person is dead, a couple missing, roads and railways including the TGV to Barcelona impassable. We woke at 3am to incredibly heavy rain, then the noise of massive hailstones hitting the skylights, and seemingly continuous flashes of lighting and rolling thunder. We got out of bed and watched the drama going on in the square below us - the drainpipes were gushing with water and the entire square was awash. It was nothing compared to the volume of water dumped over the border in Spain though. John loved it, me a little less so, but then he always loves thunder and lightning.
